Tv hell

It's a well known fact that England rarely win during major tournaments when ITV covers their matches, indeed the fact that England went out in disgrace in the Euros to little Iceland wasn't totally unsurprising considering it was broadcast on ITV and we would have lost to whoever we had played.

If ITV is a jinx to the England national team then Sky TV and BT Sport have a similar negative effect on Norwich City. Since the Canaries' return to the Premier League in 2011 (and subsequent relegations and promotion) the boys in yellow and green have won just 12 matches out of 49 broadcast live on Sky, BT and ESPN. Five of those wins were in the Championship. Actually Norwich have never won on BT Sport in six attempts but why? The fact that all of those matches were played at lunchtime (except a 3-0 FA Cup replay defeat at Fulham in 2014) suggests that we psychologically have a problem playing at that time of day.

However the fact that we are just as rubbish on Sky indicates that we just can't handle being in the spotlight. The statistics are shocking, just 7 wins in 36 Premier League matches with a goals scored per game average of 0.62! Our best performance on TV was a 3-1 home win against West Ham United in November 2013. Even then we had to come from behind after a poor showing in the first half.

Lowpoints (there have been many) include a 6-1 home defeat by Manchester City (Carlos Tevez hat-trick) in April 2012, a 4-1 defeat at Aston Villa in March 2014 (Hoolahan's infamous goal non-celebration) and a shocking 6-2 defeat at Newcastle in October 2015 (Georginio Wijnaldum hat-trick).

However during the 2012/13 season the Canaries somehow managed to get through the campaign without losing a match on Sky or ESPN, registering 3 wins and 5 draws. Those 2 famous wins on ESPN against Arsenal and Manchester United suggest that Norwich perform better at teatime than they do at lunchtime or was it just the Hughton factor?!

Anyway, the fact remains that Canary fans start fearing the worst when a fixture is switched for coverage on TV. Next up is a trip to Molineux to play Wolves on October 1st 2016 at 5.30pm. Don't expect anything more than a draw because Molineux is not a happy hunting ground for the Canaries. Their record there is shocking, just one win in the last 25 trips.
