Bizarre moments

Fan diving

On Saturday May 15th 1982 10,000 Norwich City fans travel to Hillsborough hoping to see the Canaries seal promotion back to the First Division at the first attempt. There are only minutes remaining and the score is 1-1. A point would secure promotion and the only team that can catch us is Leicester City who are playing lowly Shrewsbury Town at home.

But disaster strikes when Gary Bannister heads in from Mel Sterland's right wing cross to make it 2-1 to Wednesday, cue huge pitch invasion. But wait, there is a fan in the penalty area behind Bannister who does a cheeky impression of the Wednesday striker's goal while his mate eggs him on from behind the goal line!

Norwich manager Ken Brown was interviewed on Anglia TV after the match and suggested that the referee should have disallowed Sheffield Wednesday's winning goal. He may have had a point but it didn't matter because Leicester could only manage a goalless draw and the Canaries were back in the top flight. Grumpy Wednesday manager Jack Charlton complained that the new 3 points for a win rule (which started in 1981) had cost his team promotion.

There was a similar incident a month earlier during the European Cup Semi-Final between Aston Villa and Anderlecht in Belgium. Kenneth Brylle was about to shoot but a Villa fan ran into the penalty area and deliberately put him off. Brylle shot wide and Villa went through to the final 1-0 on aggregate despite protests from the Belgians.

Next time: A real live ghost at Carrow Road!
