I recently spent many hours trawling through YouTube searching for obscure and interesting Norwich City related videos. On this page I'd like to share with you some of my best finds. Relive again Steve Bruce's disastrous debut in the yellow and green, Dave Stringer's "goal" that never was and a cringeworthy Milk Cup Final preview. Read on...

1989

This gem must have escaped my attention because I don't recall it being on sale at the time. It's an Anglia TV production that reviews the Canaries' fortunes during the first half of the 1989/90 season which saw Dave Stringer's team riding high near the top of Division One. It's an entertaining mixture of interviews with players such as Bryan Gunn, Andy Linighan and Tim Sherwood (all caught in jovial festive mood) alongside footage of excellent away wins at Manchester United, Millwall and Nottingham Forest (don't forget this is 1989 we're talking about) and home draws against Spurs and Southampton. The latter is the memorable 4-4 draw when Robert Rosario scored an absolute belter from about 30 yards although the commentator thought Robert Fleck had scored it. Mark Bowen talks about how he expects City to finish in the top 3 after finishing 4th the season before. The Canaries finished the '89/90 season in 10th.

EVERTON

On August 12th 1972 Norwich City played their first ever match in the top flight against Everton at Carrow Road in plain yellow shirts and no badge. The game ended in a 1-1 draw with Joe Royle cancelling out Jim Bone's first half goal for the Canaries. Legendary commentator Gerald Sinstadt introduces the action. Three days later Norwich beat Ipswich 2-1 at Portman Road to record their first win in the first division.

MANCHESTER

The record books may claim that Dave Stringer scored 22 goals for Norwich in nearly 500 appearances but he really scored 23. During the Canaries' first ever season in Division One they were beaten 3-0 at Manchester City but one of the best free-kicks ever scored by a Norwich player was disallowed when City were still only 1-0 down and still in the game. The goal was disallowed for offside but today it would have stood because the player supposedly in an offside position was not interfering with play.

LIVERPOOL

One of the most memorable games ever played at Carrow Road featuring 6 goals, 3 penalties (one blazed high and wide by John Deehan) and an own goal on his debut by Steve Bruce. I can remember standing in the River End when Brucie headed into his own net in front of me to put the reigning Champions 1-0 up. At that point I and many other Canary supporters thought Ken Brown had signed a right donkey but Bruce was soon to become a Norwich City legend.

GMTV

Ken Brown and the Sunderland manager Len Ashurst are interviewed here by the late Mike Morris on GMTV. You'll notice that both managers along with Morris and his colleague Henry Kelly are all wearing hideous sweaters. The conversation is just as bland.

Guinness

This rare footage catches the Canaries in action at the 1989 Guinness Soccer Six tournament at the G-Mex in Manchester. Norwich beat Q.P.R, Luton and Man City but lose to Nottingham Forest and Wimbledon (our bogie team of the day, even at 6-a-side!) Ruel Fox has a brilliant tournament.

Albion

This was a vital away win during the Canaries' first ever season in the top flight. David Cross is the Norwich match winner but the clip is notable for the late great Trevor Hockey (surely the hairiest player ever to play for Norwich) getting booked for the 4th match in a row.
