Robert

In his weekly column in the EDP and Evening News (20.11.15) former Norwich City striker Iwan Roberts suggested that Nathan Redmond should have been called up to the England squad ahead of Manchester United youngster Jesse Lingard for the friendly against France. Roberts claimed that Redmond would have been given a chance now if he had been "playing for a top-four club".

Lingard, after only 193 minutes of Premier League football, was controversially selected by England manager Roy Hodgson because of an injury crisis. Redmond, who had pulled out of the England Under-21 squad for the European Under-21 Championship qualifiers against Bosnia & Herzegovina and Switzerland, would possibly have been called up if he had been fit. Obviously we will never know but I don't believe that Hodgson is biased towards "the top four" as Roberts suggests. The fact that he has selected Burnley goalkeeper Tom Heaton (who is playing in the Championship) for three consecutive squads in 2015/16 dispels that suggestion. Hodgson's preference towards Heaton ahead of John Ruddy must be difficult for the Canary goalie to accept but to be fair Ruddy's performances in recent months do not merit a call up at this present moment. However there is still plenty of time for Ruddy to up his game and add to his solitary England cap against Italy in 2012.

Jamie Vardy of unfashionable Leicester City was called up in May 2015 after only scoring a few Premier League goals before his record breaking exploits in 2015/16. I also seem to remember Roy Hodgson selecting practically every English player available from Southampton at one time including Jay Rodriguez, Adam Lallana, Luke Shaw and so on. Going back to the subject of Nathan Redmond, the former Birmingham winger has scored 4 Premier League goals for the Canaries this season and has provided 1 assist. He's improved considerably in the last 12 months and can still improve more. There is little doubt in my mind that Redmond will play for the full England team one day.

So besides the likes of John Ruddy and Nathan Redmond, are there any other English players at Carrow Road that Hodgson is likely to select at some stage? Unfortunately I believe that is unlikely. Central midfielder Johnny Howson may be one of the first names on Alex Neill's team sheet but he needs to improve his all round game and cut out the mistakes. Centre-back Ryan Bennett needs to stay injury free and have a longer run in the side and Cameron Jerome, a huge success in the Championship last season with 18 goals, needs to reproduce that form in the Premier League after struggling previously with Birmingham, Stoke and Crystal Palace. Lewis Grabban has been called up by Jamaica even though he was born in Croydon.

So it's unlikely then that Roy Hodgson will be calling up any Norwich players in the forseeable future. However, would it make a difference if any of the aforementioned moved to Tottenham Hotspur? Hodgson has callled up six players from White Hart Lane in recent times including most controversially Dele Alli after only a handful of Premier League games. TV pundits Danny Murphy and Jamie Redknapp questioned Hodgson's selection policy and I don't particularly agree with it either but you've to admit that Alli justified his selection with that wonder goal at Wembley against France and that crunching tackle on Morgan Schneiderlin.

I have to admit I'm not a huge fan of Roy Hodgson and some of his selections are baffling at times but if he leads England to Euro glory next summer he will be a national hero and rightly so.
